Varudhap Pirappu:The birth of the New Year in Tamil is Puthaandu Pirrappu or Varudhap Pirappu. Varudhap Pirappu falls in the month of April and it is the first day of the tamil month Chithirai. There are many customs which are followed on the New Year. Preparations begin about a week before the New Year. People go shopping for new clothes and the house is throughly cleaned. Mothers and grandmothers make sweets and snacks in anticipation of visits by their relatives and friends. Each family will begin their celebrations with the lighting of the Kuthu Villakku which is placed next to the Niraikudam. Greetings of "Puthaandu Vazthukkal" are exchanged with fervour on this day. Early in the morning on this day, the entrance is decorated with Kolam. The doorways are adorned with mango leaves (thoranam) to mark the auspiciousness of the occasion.
